Jose Antonio Salaverria has managed
to build a great team at La Joya, he considers
them his greatest asset. He employs around
60 full time workers, whose families are all invited
to live on the relatively small 10 hectare farm.
Jose is an innovator in his field; he gives better
salaries to the pickers, pays for doctors to visit
regularly, covering any medical expenses incurred
and helped build a school in the surrounding village.
In recent years, efficiencies have been found in
picking techniques so the workers
can go home early.
The most impressive thing with coffees from
La Joya, is the overall quality of picking:
Deep blood red and a uniform colour, ensures
ripeness and the sugar content is at its
most optimal level.
